What’s Happening in Surrey this August

The countdown to the end of summer may have started, but it’s not time to put away those flip-flops and sunglasses just yet!  Hot days and warm August nights are the perfect time to get out into Surrey’s natural beauty and celebrate with family and small groups of physically-distanced friends. Art classes, musical performances, educational tours and outdoor adventures promise to make this August the best ever!

Write the Future with Devon More

Join Surrey Civic Theatres from the Digital Stage for Write the Future with Devon More. More than just a musical performance, this is the show to watch! Performed from the digital stage, More’s performances command attention: building musical arrangements for her indie rock/pop tunes from scratch, she uses a loop pedal to live-mix the electric guitar, flute, glockenspiel, and whatever else is in her long arm’s reach. She delivers cheeky, melodic rants on topics from the rat race to rent cheques, and she always serves her songs with a side of storytelling. Write the Future is an amazing show that is more than a concert, and not exactly a play!

Paddling at Crescent Beach

The Crescent Beach Paddle Shack (3136 McBride Avenue) is open! With the Pacific Ocean right at our fingertips (toe tips?), water activities are an essential part of any Surrey summer. Beginners and advanced paddlers can visit Sea to Sky Adventure Company’s Paddle Shack at Crescent Beach to rent paddleboards and kayaks and explore the warm, calm waters of the protected bay.  Lessons and tours are also available.

Art Takeout “At Leisure”

This summer, have fun while exploring artistic techniques with Surrey Art Gallery’s Art Takeout “at leisure” courses. These hands-on, interactive programs are a wonderful way to try new artistic mediums, build on creative skills, all while working at your own pace from home. All ages and abilities are welcome, and course materials are available to pick-up from Surrey Art Gallery (13750 88 Avenue) starting August 10. Each box includes the necessary art supplies and links to six video lessons with experienced artist-educators.  There are two Art Takeout courses to choose from:

  • Drawing in the Field focuses on learning and practising drawing skills. Each class builds on the next, and participants will use perspective and composition to look at elements of a landscape – from the natural beauty of plants and flowers to the bustling energy of city streets and buildings. This at your own pace course, led by artist-educator Alexandra Thomson, costs $15.
  • Use your imagination to turn blocks of clay into ceramics in Handbuilding with Clay with artist educator Amelia Butcher. This at your own pace course is $35 and includes firing and glazing.

Paranormal Tours at the Pink Palace

If exploring the possibility of celestial beings is your thing, well you’re in luck because the current owners of the Pacific Inn Hotel & Resort (1160 King George Boulevard), currently known as Pink Palace Film, have decided to open the doors and welcome visitors to join them for a 90-minute walking tour of this reportedly haunted hotel, and film set. From a knowledgeable guide, you’ll learn about the history and legends of the hotel, hear about the ghost stories and sightings and see where some of your favourite shows have been filmed.  Who knows, you may even have an encounter of your own … many have! Limited dates are available, and this may be your last chance before the hotel is renovated and reopened, so be sure to book soon!

Bee Hive Tour

Visit the Honeybee Centre (7480 176 Street) and learn all about the intriguing world of honey bees on a mini hive tour. Your outdoor presentation will introduce you to the different species of bees, why and how to light a bee smoker, the life cycle of a worker bee, pollination and the importance of honey bees. They’ll even open up a hive and show some frames of bees … from a safe distance, of course! See firsthand why bees aren’t as scary as many of us think. The next scheduled tour is August 12, but keep an eye on their website as they may add more dates.
